WHEN I TRIED to prepare for the closing
party for the sound exhibition I curated <Gruenrekorder in Seoul>,
I came up with the idea of food in a certain sound. First, I thought
about BBQ and beer party, however, this plan has declined by the
sponsor. After that, I realized that I got obsessed to the sound 'B' in
terms of food for a while. So, I decided to buy only food starting with
sound 'B'.
Perhaps, people pronounced much more 'b' sound more than before to mention all these food, since everything was starting with sound 'b' which I planned to react to the sound exhibition I curated for Roland Etzin's field recording work.
All the food was eaten by visitors who came for the closing party, but the sound 'b' was also floating around the same space and time while we had the closing party. Sound 'b' is one of the first sound we learn to pronounce when we are young as a baby. P,b,m all the sounds made by lips are the first sounds we learn as a baby since we don't have much teeth to use to pronounce any other sound. Of course, I learned during my college time for my major, Korean language and litertaure, but this also makes many sense to think about our names for papa, mama, bab. Korean pronounciation for food can be bab or mamma. Perhaps, the reason why we call 'bab' for cooked rice can be based on this story of sound 'b'.
